Why I Chose to Become a Counselor

I’m a Licensed Mental Health Counselor (LMHC), military veteran, and the founder of RPM Counseling. I provide trauma-informed counseling for adults in Plantation and throughout Florida by telehealth.

I chose to become a counselor because I’ve seen firsthand how difficult it can be to carry stress, responsibility, and difficult experiences without having the right space to process them. My professional background includes mental health counseling, crisis intervention, behavioral health coordination, law enforcement-related training, and working with people navigating high-stress environments. Those experiences continue to shape the practical, grounded approach I bring to counseling.

Before becoming a counselor, I served in the United States Marine Corps as a Military Police Officer. That experience gave me firsthand exposure to high-pressure environments, structure, responsibility, and the culture that can come with roles where you’re expected to stay composed and keep moving forward. It also taught me the importance of trust, communication, resilience, and having a place to work through difficult experiences before they begin affecting other parts of your life.

Over time, I became increasingly interested in what happens when people are struggling beneath the surface – especially when they are used to being the person others rely on. I wanted to create the kind of counseling environment that feels approachable, practical, and grounded in real life.

That is a big part of why I created RPM Counseling.

Counseling Built Around Real Life

Many adults hesitate to start counseling because they worry they won’t be understood, will be judged, or will be pushed into conversations that feel forced or disconnected from their lives. I wanted to create a different kind of experience.

I believe counseling should feel human and collaborative. It should give you a place to be honest about what’s happening while also helping you understand patterns, develop practical tools, and make changes that carry into your everyday life.

My goal isn’t simply to help you feel better for the hour you’re in my office. I want you to leave with a better understanding of yourself and skills you can continue using when the next difficult situation comes along.

Experience Beyond the Therapy Room

In addition to private practice, I’m involved in behavioral health coordination and crisis intervention initiatives within the community. I serve on the Mission United Advisory Council and have participated in collaborative efforts focused on improving access to support services for veterans, first responders, and individuals facing behavioral health challenges.

I also provide speaking engagements and training related to crisis intervention, trauma-informed approaches, stress, burnout, de-escalation, resilience, and behavioral health awareness. I’ve worked with law enforcement agencies, healthcare professionals, universities, first responder organizations, community groups, and other professional audiences navigating high-stress environments and complex human situations.

These experiences have given me a perspective that extends beyond the therapy room. They have helped me understand how stress, trauma, work, relationships, identity, and the systems around us can all affect how someone is doing.

Who I Work With

I work with adults navigating a wide range of challenges, including:

  • Trauma and chronic stress

  • Anxiety and emotional overwhelm

  • Burnout and emotional exhaustion

  • Men’s mental health

  • Veteran transition and adjustment

  • First responder stress

  • Relationship challenges

  • Grief and life transitions

  • Emotional shutdown and disconnection

  • High-pressure professional environments

You don’t need to fit neatly into one of these categories to reach out. Sometimes you simply know that something isn’t working the way you’d like, you’re feeling stuck, or you’re having a harder time managing life than you used to.

That’s a good place to start.

My Approach to Counseling

My approach combines trauma-informed care with practical tools, emotional awareness, accountability, resilience-building, and strategies you can apply outside of therapy. Depending on your goals and needs, our work may incorporate Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), mindfulness techniques, solution-focused strategies, stress management, emotional regulation skills, and values-based exploration.

I don’t believe therapy should be overly scripted or disconnected from everyday life. I want our work to be relevant to what you’re actually dealing with – whether that’s trauma, burnout, emotional exhaustion, relationship stress, a major life transition, or simply feeling stuck.

Most importantly, I believe therapy should ultimately help you become more capable of handling life on your own. The goal is to build understanding, confidence, and practical skills that stay with you beyond the therapy room.

A Counseling Practice Built With Intention

RPM Counseling was built around a simple idea: creating the kind of counseling environment I would feel comfortable walking into based on my own background, experiences, and understanding of high-pressure cultures.

That means creating a space where you don’t have to perform, have everything figured out, or explain why something is difficult before you deserve support.

You can simply show up as you are, and we can start there.

I provide in-person counseling in Plantation, Florida, and serve adults throughout Broward County, including Fort Lauderdale, Davie, Sunrise, Coral Springs, Tamarac, and surrounding South Florida communities. Telehealth counseling is available throughout Florida.

If you’re considering counseling and want an approach that is practical, grounded, and trauma-informed, I offer a free consultation to help you decide whether RPM Counseling is the right fit.
